A double pram can simplify the lives of families, particularly in busy shops or on busy streets. Find a model that has generous storage space for stowing nappies, snacks and other essentials.

Some parents who are first-time parents choose a future-proof pushchair that can be used as a single pram when baby is born, and later transformed into a twin-mode after the baby has arrived. Joolz provides a variety of these options.

Tandem

The announcement that you are expecting a child is among life's most exciting experiences. However, once the excitement fades and the reality sets in, you may be faced with a multitude of choices regarding how to prepare your family for the arrival of your little one or one. One of the most important things to consider is choosing the correct pram or pushchair.

Tandem prams (also known as "in-line" double prams) are a classic design that feature two bassinets or seats for prams arranged side-by-side. The front seat, which is typically padded, reclines flat and is suitable for babies. The second seat is a bit higher and is designed to accommodate toddlers as young as 3 years. Certain models let you choose whether your children look at each other or look outwards. Many tandems can be made into one pushchair when your oldest child is no longer in need of the second seat.

In terms of price the tandem is cheaper than a twin pushchair and can be an excellent choice for parents looking to save money without compromising on safety or function. However, the drawback of a tandem is that it may be heavy and long to steer, especially when you're bumping up or down kerbs. It is usually less stable than a twin pram especially if the child with the most weight is seated in the front. A tandem isn't always easy to fit on public transport, and it may be difficult to navigate narrow pavements.

The iCandy Peach is a popular model with a strong image that's a great choice for a singleton parent who wants something streamlined however, the tandem mode can make it feel heavy and long when pushing. It comes with a clever frame that expands widthways to allow for the addition of the second seat, and can be used with a variety of combinations of carrycots, buggy seats and car seats (two at a time or separately). The iCandy Wave tandem is another lightweight twin buggy option that's user-friendly and compatible with a range of car seats and carrycots.

Side by side

There are a lot of things to consider when choosing a double pushchair or pram. If you're buying a double pram for twins or siblings close in age there are a variety of configuration options to consider. Tandem prams, referred to as side-by-side prams, are popular choices because they can be set up in a way that the infant can be seated in the bassinet on top while the older child or toddler is sitting in the second seat.

Some models even have convertible seats, which means you can adapt the configuration to meet the needs of your family throughout the toddler and baby years. This allows you to see your children at all times, and allows them to be a part of the journey as they walk.

Tandem prams are often jogging or all-terrain buggies, which means they're ideal for outdoor adventures and in the park. These are also good for narrow aisles or checkouts in shops and supermarkets, as they are more compact.

It can be converted from a rear-facing infant car seat to a forward-facing toddler car seat and the bassinet-style mode is a great choice for infants (although keep in mind that infants under four months old shouldn't be able to sleep in strollers due to the danger of asphyxia from position).

The only issue with the iCandy Peach is that it is quite heavy. However, Cher found that it was overcome by how easy it is to manoeuvre and how spacious the storage is, with two hanging parent and child cup holders as well as seat-back pockets, and a large underseat storage basket. She also appreciated the seat's design, which is reversible, so they can be set to face each other for siblings who want to talk and get together while out and out and about.

The Delta Children LX Side-by-Side Stroller is a smaller model, but still impressive. It weighs just 18 pounds, is small, and has an auto-standing fold, making it easy to carry around or put in your trunk.
